Paul Heyman has rushed to the defence of Brock Lesnar, telling critics of WWE's decision to bring back the former world champion to "get over it", while also claiming that fans will be unable to "cancel" the 48-year-old.
"Everything in life is met with criticism, I don't pay attention to that. If you were in MetLife Stadium on Sunday, you would understand that return meant a lot to that audience. That audience was shocked to see Brock Lesnar come out and to see him F5 John Cena. Nobody left MetLife Stadium going, 'Oh God, they brought back Brock.' People were just going nuts. That's our paying audience. They're happy to see him, I'm happy to be part of a team that presents him. There’s always going to be critics of anything that we do, and very few people ever make it to the top in life without either making mistakes or having skeletons in their closet," Heyman said on the Ariel Helwani Show.
"Obviously, the decision was made, it's time to bring back Brock Lesnar. Whatever that decision is based on, I respect it. If there are critics of it, get over it. He's here and he's going to be here and you ain't going to be able to cancel him. And I'm happy to have him back because the audience is happy to have him back. If we brought him back and the audience rebelled against it, I wouldn't be happy to have him back."
WWE Chief Content Officer Paul "Triple H" Levesque had already expressed his happiness about Lesnar's return, but Levesque has answered what is next for Lesnar on ESPN's Get Up.
"Have you met Brock? Whatever the hell he wants. When you're Brock Lesnar, you sort of can - when that music hits and you walk down that aisle, doesn't matter where he is, he sort of does what he wants to do. So we're thrilled to have The Beast back. You know, we hit him up and said, 'Time to come home.' And he was into it, and here we are. A massive, massive moment for our WWE fans, something that they thought they wouldn't get to see. And making a statement with John Cena. You know, huge - and we’re thrilled to have him back," Triple H noted.
Cody Rhodes, meanwhile, gave more of a standard answer while discussing Brock's return to the company, simply saying on ESPN that Lesnar fits with the direction WWE is moving in.
"Brock, in terms of athleticism, one of the things - we held tryouts going into SummerSlam weekend and you have so many NIL athletes and so many people coming from the world of sport. Tiffany Stratton is a great example, someone on our roster now who came from the world of sport and has grown into becoming a professional wrestler and part of sports entertainment. Brock is somebody who is a NCAA Champion, UFC Heavyweight Champion, he fits right in with the direction that WWE is going in terms of sport meeting entertainment," Rhodes added.
Brock Lesnar made his return to WWE in the closing moments of SummerSlam, F-5ing John Cena to close out the show. WWE have been criticised over the decision to bring him back due to Lesnar being named in an ongoing sex trafficking lawsuit filed by Janel Grant against WWE and Vince McMahon.
Among the allegations against Lesnar, it is claimed sexual encounters with Grant were a condition for him re-signing with WWE. He also allegedly directed Grant to film herself urinating and send the footage to him.
A spokesperson for Grant issued the following statement following Lesnar's return:
"For far too long, abuse was allowed to thrive under WWE's leadership. Instead of righting this wrong, WWE has done nothing to ensure those responsible are held accountable. This attempt to sweep misconduct under the rug will backfire. We look forward to the full set of facts, including those about Mr. Lesnar, coming out in a court of law where they belong but, in the meantime, we refer you back to Janel Grant's updated complaint, which outlines, in detail, the abuse she endured by McMahon and others while employed at WWE."
