Americans who “grew up on WWE” have been cited as a driving force behind Donald Trump winning the 2024 United States presidential election.
The WWE Hall of Famer was elected as the 47th president of the United States on November 5, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump’s win came about after he flipped key battleground states that Joe Biden won in 2020, including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Georgia.
MSNBC political commentator and host Joy Reid claimed following the election that it was Generation X voters who sent Trump back to the White House.
“My generation, Generation X, the people who grew up on WWE and Hulk Hogan and Donald Trump, did this. They did this. They are the ones who looked in the face of somebody who looked them in the face and said, ‘I want to be a dictator on day one.’ We did this,” Reid said.
Exit polls from multiple news organisations including NBC News reveal that people in key states between the ages of 45 and 64 overwhelmingly voted for Donald Trump over Kamala Harris, with Trump earning 54 per cent of the vote in the demographic compared to 44 per cent for Vice President Harris. Kamala Harris led amongst people between 18 and 29, while the 30-44 and over 65 demographics were extremely close in voting for Trump or Harris.
Generation X is people who were born between 1965 and 1980. As of 2024, people in Generation X are between 44 years old and 59 years old.
Pro wrestling was featured during Donald Trump’s campaign, in particular through Hulk Hogan, Kane and The Undertaker. Linda McMahon was also one of Trump’s top donors and she will be the co-chair of the 47th president’s transition team.
