After 18 months, WWE have abandoned their plans to legalise sports betting on scripted matches in the United States.

Speaking with CNBC, TKO President Mark Shapiro revealed WWE won't be entering the sports betting market.

"It's not happening. We're scripted... we're not going to ask Paul Levesque to keep his scripts so under wraps, so we can start sports betting. It just doesn't jive. We'll do it with UFC, we are doing it with UFC, and it's really growing and really lends itself to sports betting," Shapiro said.

It emerged in May 2023 that WWE were in talks with state regulators in Colorado and Michigan to legalise betting on WWE matches. There was immediate hesitancy from regulators, however.

Had the plans been successful, it would have fundamentally changed how WWE feuds and matches are booked as results would need to be locked in months ahead of time. Wrestlers also wouldn't be allowed to know if they were winning or losing until shortly before the match took place.

Betting on WWE matches is legal in other countries, including the United Kingdom.
