On this day in 1979, the WWE Intercontinental Championship was born.

Introduced as the Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship 42 years ago, the first champion was said to have 'won a tournament in Rio de Janeiro' for the Title. 

Since then, aside from a short period in late 2002, the Intercontinental Championship has been a mainstay of the WWE. Often seen as the 'workhorse' title, it has been a dream of many young wrestlers to hold the Championship that they saw lifted a lot by hard workers, legends, and icons of the industry.
