Report: Update On Why WWE Scrapped The King & Queen Of The Ring PPV

Latest on WWE King & Queen of the Ring

WWE were originally set to revive the King of the Ring tournament and debut the Queen of the Ring contest in late May with the King & Queen of the Ring pay-per-view but the company recently scrapped the event and switched it to Night of Champions. The pay-per-view will emanate from Saudi Arabia on Saturday, May 27.

Reports indicated WWE made the change in what was simply a creative decision as the organisation believed Night of Champions will mean something in Saudi Arabia. In an update, Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter confirmed the change was a booking decision and the reason for the switch will "become obvious...after the Puerto Rico show and in the build to the show."

Speculation has suggested WWE made the change since May 27 is the date when Roman Reigns will reach 1,000 days as Universal Champion if he doesn't lose the title before the show and WWE want to put a spotlight on their top star. Reigns looks unlikely to lose the championship as he isn't scheduled to be in action at the Backlash pay-per-view on May 6, with his next match seemingly set to take place at Night of Champions.

The status of the King & Queen of the Ring tournaments is unknown but they could be slotted into the schedule at some point after the upcoming WWE Draft on April 28 and May 1.
