Report: Why Brock Lesnar Vs. Cody Rhodes Was The Second Match At WWE SummerSlam

Many expected the match to be one of last of the night.

The third match in the series between Cody Rhodes and Brock Lesnar went on second at SummerSlam, a placement that drew raised eyebrows from some.

As one of the most heavily promoted matches on the show, many expected it to be nearer the top of the card (if not the main event itself).

Speaking to Mike McGuire for McGuire on Wrestling, the Wrestling Observer's Dave Meltzer posited why Cody and Brock were put out there so early, saying:

"Roman was the main event by far. Could they have put it higher on the card? Yes, but you know Brock. He likes to get out of dodge. If it was a normal show, Brock would've been in the opener and gotten out, but because of Logan Paul basically insisting on being in the opener, Brock had to go to the second match".

Logan Paul had openly lobbied to open the show so that he could fly from Detroit to Dallas in order to watch his brother Jake's boxing match against Nate Diaz.

Speaking about his match with Lesnar (to Sports Illustrated), Rhodes noted that he did not see his opponent backstage afterwards. This was following an unplanned post-match scene that saw Brock shake and then raise Cody's hand.

Lesnar will be taking some time away from WWE following SummerSlam, but is expected to be back in time for the build to WrestleMania 40.
