In somewhat of a surprise, it was revealed on the March 30 episode of Monday Night Raw from Madison Square Garden that it won't be Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker at WrestleMania 42, but Rollins will instead go one-on-one with Gunther at WWE's biggest weekend of the year.
Rollins vs. Breakker had been planned for WrestleMania as of the Royal Rumble, and it was still believed to be the plan as Breakker and Rollins looked to be cleared from their respective injuries ahead of April 18. On Monday's Raw, however, Gunther attacked Seth Rollins while Seth stalked Paul Heyman in the ring, with Gunther vs. Rollins being made official soon after.
According to WrestleVotes on Fightful Select, Gunther vs. Seth Rollins was finalised the week before the March 30 episode of WWE Raw. Booking Gunther vs. Rollins was not a unanimous decision within WWE as some on the creative team wanted Rollins to wrap up his storyline against The Vision, while others simply wanted to get Gunther on the WrestleMania card. Gunther was reportedly originally planned for a match with Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 42, but those plans fell through due to Mysterio suffering fractured ribs in January.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer has reported that Bron Breakker has been cleared to return to the ring and the decision to switch to Gunther vs. Seth Rollins was because WWE wanted more time to build Breakker vs. Rollins on TV.
Gunther becoming Rollins' opponent reportedly happened because of the injury to Bronson Reed. After plans were put in motion for The Vision to work a celebrity match alongside IShowSpeed, it meant Logan Paul was out as a possible foe for Rollins at WrestleMania and it was determined that Rollins needed a new opponent.
