"I appreciate the style of today. I appreciate the athleticism of the performers of today. Are they perfect? No. But neither were we."

While it has been common in professional wrestling matches for decades, WWE has started to crack down on Superstars slapping their leg when throwing kicks. The new edict reportedly came about after Vince McMahon got mad over a leg slapping incident on a recent SmackDown show.

Ahead of last night's edition of NXT, WWE Hall Of Famer Shawn Michaels was asked for his thoughts on leg slapping by the New York Post.

The Heartbreak Kid said: "Clearly I look back and I go, OK I did it. I just did one. I'm always of the cloth, I can remember when I started people telling me too fast, too much, too this and there's a balance there.

"They were right in some respects and at the same time, the business also evolves and changes. Football isn't played the same. Basketball isn't played the same, so I don't know. I'm somebody that embraces those changes. I feel like somewhere in the middle and balance is so important. I appreciate the style of today. I appreciate the athleticism of the performers of today. Are they perfect? No. But neither were we."

Despite the ban, leg slapping was common during NXT's main event match between Adam Cole and Finn Balor. The former NXT Champion repeatedly slapped his leg when throwing kicks, including during an Enzuigiri and a Superkick.
