New Japan Pro Wrestling hosted their latest Battle Autumn show on October 26, featuring a surprise return by the legendary Great Muta.

During a NJPW WORLD TV Title tournament clash between Toru Yano and Great-O-Khan, the influential Muta appeared at ringside and sprayed Khan with the mist, allowing Yano to get the win and advance to the quarter finals of the tournament.

One of the legendary ‘Three Musketeers’ of New Japan alongside Shinya Hashimoto and Masahiro Chono, Muta - the dark alter ego of Keiji Mutoh - last appeared in a New Japan ring at January’s crossover Wrestle Kingdom 16 show with Pro Wrestling NOAH, the promotion where Muta currently plies his trade.

The last time Mutoh wrestled under the Muta gimmick in a New Japan ring was at Wrestle Kingdom 8 in 2014, where the team of Muta and Yano defeated Suzuki-gun’s Minoru Suzuki and Shelton Benjamin.

Mutoh is currently in the midst of his retirement tour, with the former NWA World’s Heavyweight Champion set to hang up his boots in February 2023. Before then, Mutoh will wrestle his final match as Great Muta in January.
