CM Punk’s AEW World Title shot was all part of Tony Khan’s plan

Tony Khan is known for his long-term vision regarding the AEW World Championship scene, with the AEW President revealing he had the first four champions planned out from day one.

CM Punk became the fifth man to hold the gold after defeating Hagman Adam Page at Double or Nothing 2022, and beforehand Khan admitted that part of this too was according to plan, telling Andreas Hale on The Corner Podcast that Punk was always destined to have his first shot at the the title at Double or Nothing:

“Well, yeah [the plan was always to have CM Punk get his first title match at Double or Nothing]. I thought it would be the perfect timing to have a world title match and have him get his first chance at the title because he had been, upon arrival, saying that he wanted to come in, he wanted to prove himself, he wanted to get back into pro wrestling, fight the young wrestlers he hasn’t fought and then along the way, there were veterans who challenged him and I thought some veterans who deserve more respect,” said Khan.
