Report: AEW To Revive Old WCW Concept On Dynamite

A WCW gimmick could be coming back in AEW

An old concept from World Championship Wrestling is set to be revived on the Wednesday, June 21 edition of AEW Dynamite from the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois.

Already announced for Dynamite is a Blind Eliminator Tournament that will earn the winners a shot at the AEW World Tag Team Championships currently held by FTR. No teams have been announced for the tournament and Andrew Zarian of the Mat Men Pro Wrestling Podcast has since reported the Blind Eliminator is "basically Lethal Lottery."

That would suggest 16 wrestlers will be booked to form eight teams drawn at random, which could lead to odd combinations like Jay White teaming with Orange Cassidy or Sammy Guevara teaming with Wardlow. The winners then usually clash in a Battle Royal.

Lethal Lottery was first used by WCW at Starrcade in 1991 and 1992, before BattleBowl in November 1993. WCW used Lethal Lottery for the last time at Slamboree 1996.

There were hints AEW might revive the concept in late 2022 after the promotion filed to trademark "WrestleBowl" and "Wrestling Bowl."

Check out the current lineup for AEW Dynamite below:

  • Orange Cassidy & Katsuyori Shibata vs. Zack Sabre Jr. & Daniel Garcia
  • Kris Statlander (c) vs. Taya Valkyrie - TBS Championship
  • Chris Jericho, Sammy Guevara, & Minoru Suzuki vs. Action Andretti, AR Fox, & Darius Martin
  • The Gunns vs. The Hardys
  • Jeff Jarrett vs. Mark Briscoe - Concession Stand Brawl
  • Blind Eliminator Tournament for a shot at FTR's AEW World Tag Team Titles
