Backstage News On Sting Winning His AEW Retirement Match At Revolution

Sting retired on top at AEW Revolution

After almost 40 years, Sting's professional wrestling career is officially over after The Icon and Darby Allin defeated The Young Bucks to retain the AEW World Tag Team Titles in the main event of Revolution on Sunday, March 3. The finish saw Darby Allin deck Matthew Jackson with a Coffin Drop before Sting applied the Scorpion Deathlock for the submission victory.

Talents often lose their final matches inside the squared circle and Sting revealed during the post-Revolution press conference that he was resistant to going undefeated in the promotion and ending his time as an AEW World Tag Team Champion. Fightful Select have noted, however, that AEW and Tony Khan were adamant that Sting end his career on top and as a champion.

Honouring Sting appropriately was important to AEW management and the decision was made weeks ago for Sting and Darby Allin to go over in Stinger's last-ever match.

Sting main eventing Revolution had been the plan since he announced he would be retiring at the pay-per-view. It had previously been revealed the multi-time world champion selected The Young Bucks as his final opponents after having so much fun with Matthew and Nicholas Jackson during their Forbidden Door 2022 trios match. Sting noted following Revolution that his retirement was one of the top three matches of his career.
