President-elect Donald Trump has picked WWE co-founder Linda McMahon as his nominee for Education Secretary. A previous report indicated that she would likely be appointed US Secretary of Commerce.

McMahon is a long-time supporter of Trump and donated millions of dollars to his presidential campaign. She also led the Small Business Administration during Trump's first presidency.

The 76-year-old is currently Chair of the Board of the pro-Trump think tank the America First Policy Institute.

Announcing the pick on his Truth Social platform, Trump said McMahon would "use her decades of leadership experience, and deep understanding of both Education and Business, to empower the next Generation of American Students and Workers".

The incoming President has previously criticised the US Department of Education and threatened to close it down.

McMahon has little experience in education, though she did serve on Connecticut state's Board of Education between 2009 and 2010. Linda McMahon pursued her own run for office in 2010 and 2012, when she quit her role as WWE CEO in a failed bid to get a seat in the US Senate.

Last month, McMahon was named in a lawsuit filed by former WWE ring boys, which claims that defendants were fully aware of the sexual abuse they suffered at the hands of WWE personnel decades ago.
