La Resistance - Rene Dupree and Sylvain Grenier - celebrate after winning the WWE World Tag Team Titles in 2003

Former WWE star Rene Dupree has spoken about plans the company supposedly had to revive the ECW World Tag Team Titles after they relaunched ECW as a third brand in 2006.

According to Dupree, the plan was for him and former La Resistance partner Sylvain Grenier to reform and win the titles. However, substance abuse issues Dupree was dealing with, coupled with an unfortunate incident during a match in Ohio Valley Wrestling, may have put an end to those plans.

Speaking with Davey Boy Smith Jr. about the episode during a recent edition of his Cafe de Rene podcast, Dupree said:

"Just debuted on ECW the night before, and the plan was - this is a shoot because I heard it from Pat (Patterson), that they were gonna make ECW Tag Titles and give it to us (La Resistance). But, I had started developing (a) substance abuse problem and my lower back was hurting so I decided to take a couple muscle relaxers and I took a couple more and a couple more and a couple more and then me and Sly were facing off you and Kofi Kingston, right? And Sly had gotten me these brand-new pair of tights because Vince (McMahon) didn't like the loose tights because I would flop around in the midsection area if you know what I mean. So Sly gets these extra small pair of tights that don't fit. But I was also not in the right frame of mind. So, we have the match. I've never seen the match back and I don't wanna see it back. That was like a rock bottom for me… I'm like celebrating and my scrotum is sticking out of my f*cking tights. I'm sorry again, Harry".

WWE's plans to bring back the ECW World Tag Team Titles and make La Resistance champions were reported in newsletters, including The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, around that time.

La Resistance wrestled one match on ECW TV, squashing Los Luchas on the February 20, 2007 edition of the show. Dupree subsequently checked into a rehab facility and opted to leave WWE in the wake of the Benoit family tragedy.

In December 2024, the two-time former WWE tag champ noted that he was seeking help for substance abuse issues.
