While talents can sometimes see the writing on the wall ahead of being released by WWE, that reportedly wasn't the case this time around.
WWE carried out several releases over the weekend, letting go Akam, Rezar, Paul Ellering, Blair Davenport, Cedric Alexander, Giovanni Vinci, Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson, Isla Dawn, and Elektra Lopez. Sonya Deville was also informed her contract was not being renewed.
According to Dr. Chris Featherstone on Backstage Pass, several of the talents who were released were "upset and shocked" at being let go by the company. All of the released talent are subject to a 90-day non-compete clause except for Sonya Deville, due to her contract expiring.
While an exact reason has not been revealed, the belief within NXT is the WWE releases were connected to the next batch of NXT call-ups which are expected to take place at some point in 2025.
At least one of the released WWE talents may end up in All Elite Wrestling as the expectation is the Hurt Syndicate will push for AEW to bring in Cedric Alexander.
