WWE aren't very happy at the moment.

Cody Rhodes' status in the main event of WrestleMania 40 has looked to be in jeopardy since The Rock's return at the start of 2024 and a report from Sports Illustrated stated "multiple sources close to WWE Head of Creative Paul 'Triple H' Levesque have indicated that Rhodes will not headline this year's event, nor will he 'finish his story' at WrestleMania."

Much of the Sports Illustrated article appeared to be speculation, with matches suggested by Justin Barrasso for WrestleMania being The Rock vs. Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, CM Punk vs. Cody Rhodes, and Gunther vs. Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Title following a Gunther win in the Royal Rumble.

In an update, WrestleVotes has reported the three suggested matches being "set in stone" is said to be "a little naive." WWE are also unhappy about the Sports Illustrated report in general, particularly the "multiple sources close to WWE Head of Creative Paul 'Triple H' Levesque" line.

"Regarding the Sports Illustrated/ WrestleMania 40 report, and after speaking to a few of my own contacts, I believe the following - those 3 matches could absolutely happen in Philadelphia. However, the 'set in stone' nature of the article is a little naive I've been told. Source also relayed that WWE is not happy with the report in general, especially labeling it as 'sources close to Triple H,' as if he'd be so open with this type of specific information," WrestleVotes tweeted.

WrestleMania 40 will emanate from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7.
