Pro wrestling legend Sabu's retirement match has been given an extreme stipulation, with his scheduled opponent Joey Janela announcing that the bout will be fought under No Ropes Barbed Wire rules.

Janela made the announcement at GCW The Philly Special on April 6. He will meet Sabu in the match at Joey Janela's Spring Break 9 on April 18.

There was initially concern that the match may not go ahead, due to Janela suffering a torn biceps, but it was later confirmed as happening.

Sabu will be going into the match with a decided advantage as far as experience goes. He competed in many No Ropes Barbed Wire matches for Japanese promotion FMW in the early 1990s, before famously defeating ECW Champion Terry Funk in one at ECW's Born to be Wired event in 1997.

Sabu has wrestled in several more since, including against Abyss at TNA Turning Point 2005. Janela, meanwhile, has previously competed in two No Ropes Barbed Wire matches.

For those unaware, the match sees the traditional ring ropes replaced by lines of barbed wire. The stipulation is uncommon in mainstream pro wrestling, with WWE never running one. AEW, on the other hand, have put on a couple of variations of the match type.
